🌳 Treehugger level: Expert. 🌳
Our Technical Director Friedrich Scherzinger is having a heartfelt moment with the magnificent palo borracho (Ceiba chodatii)—because some climate solutions deserve a hug!
Today is the International Tree Day, giving us another reason to celebrate the incredible role trees play—not only in fighting climate change, but in preserving the richness of our ecosystems, cultures, and communities. Trees are nature’s original climate technology: they store carbon, protect biodiversity, and offer ecological, cultural, and aesthetic value that no artificial solution can replicate.
One standout in Paraguay – where our project Forestal Río Aquidabán is located – is Ceiba chodatii. This majestic tree isn’t just visually stunning — it plays a vital role in carbon sequestration, ecosystem resilience, and holds deep cultural significance.
Its huge, bottle-shaped trunk serves an ecological purpose: it stores water during the rainy season to survive long droughts, making it a keystone species in the dry Chaco region. In fact, the hollow trunks can grow to such impressive sizes that during the Chaco War, they were reportedly used as shelter by soldiers.
Trees like Ceiba chodatii remind us why protecting and restoring forests is one of the most powerful actions we can take—for the planet and future generations.
