🌲Happy International Forest Day to all the tree lovers and nature enthusiasts!🌳

According to the FAO https://lnkd.in/dbx\_SG8x, this year’s theme is “Celebrating forests and economies – celebrating the essential roles of forests in driving economic prosperity.”

In line with this year’s theme, with this year’s observance falling on Saturday, 21 March, Global Wood’s project in Paraguay shows how forests and economies can go hand in hand. In a region with one of the highest deforestation rates in the world, the project has been able to reverse forest loss while maintaining agricultural and cattle farming practices for local farmers.

This is especially important because cattle farmers in Paraguay are heavily dependent on the weather. In dry years, they face serious problems as cattle find less food. By combining cattle and forest in a silvopastoral agroforestry system, trees can help increase water holding capacity by providing shade and creating additional income opportunities for land managers, such as timber and carbon removals.

The FAO not only sets the frame for International Day of Forests each year through its global theme, but also creates the space for this conversation at its headquarters in Rome. The images shared here offer a small insight into how the FAO celebrates the day on site – bringing forests, water, landscapes, and people into one visible narrative. One of our team members visited FAO, which made these impressions especially meaningful for us. We identify with this perspective: forests are not only worth protecting for their ecological value, but also because they are closely linked to livelihoods, resilience, and long-term economic stability.
