Last week, our Technical Director Friedrich Scherzinger attended the EU Carbon Farming Summit, bringing back valuable insights on the evolving policy and market landscape. A key focus was the EU Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF), which aims to bring more clarity and credibility to carbon farming.

✨Advances in dMRV – Unlocking Potential for Small Projects:

One major development is the progress in Monitoring, Reporting & Verification (MRV) through a combination of radar technology with remote sensing. This is a game-changer for smaller projects, such as our bioVers agroforestry project, where traditional certification is often too costly. The key question remains: Will auditors, frameworks, and buyers accept these lower-cost verification methods? Approaches like Kanop and CarbonSpaceTech are worth watching closely.

✨Insetting vs. Offsetting – The Shift is Clear

Another hot topic was the growing preference for insetting over offsetting. Instead of buying external credits, companies—especially those connected to agriculture—integrate carbon removal directly into their supply chains.
💡 Example? A food producer increasing soil carbon sequestrationon its own land and directly accounting for the impact in its sustainability reporting.
Why is insetting gaining traction?
✅ Strengthens supply chain resilience
✅ Enhances credibility & avoids external credit market risks
✅ Delivers biodiversity & soil health co-benefits
That said, offsetting remains essential, particularly for sectors without direct access to land-based solutions or high residual emissions. A hybrid approach may be the most effective way forward.

✨ Regulatory & Market Trends – What’s Next?

Discussions also highlighted the growing role of corporate sustainability reporting and green claims, increasingly tied to compliance frameworks and post-2030 climate policies. Balancing private initiatives with public support will be crucial for the future of carbon farming.
Beyond policy and technical aspects, the summit was a fantastic opportunity to connect with like-minded professionals driving carbon sequestration and biodiversity efforts — and to unwind over a pint of Guinness in one of Dublin’s cozy pubs. Great ideas often start with good conversations — and maybe a bit of Irish stout!

How do you see these trends shaping the voluntary carbon and biodiversity credit markets? Let’s discuss! 👇
