Project Description

In 2002 we were invited by the Ugandan Ministry of Environment to reforest the Kikonda Forest Reserve. Since then, more than 8 million trees had been planted, covering an area larger than 10,000 soccer fields.

The project is located in northwestern Uganda, in the province of Hoima. Although the area was designated for reforestation by the Ugandan government already in the 60s, the reforestation goals were never reached. In 2002, we acquired a tree planting license for the area and began reforestation efforts. Today, the project encompasses an eligible planting area of 7,321 ha alongside a conservation area of 4,861 hectares.

The reforestation supports a sustainable timber industry, sequesters carbon, and provides vital habitat for many species, as highlighted in various FSC reports. In 2020, the project was successfully transferred to a local family-owned business, which continues to manage the forest according to GoldStandard certification requirements. Until 2022, global-woods international assisted the project in the promotion and sale of carbon credits.
