Project Description

This project is located in rural southwestern Germany, a region that experienced a significant loss of structural diversity due to land consolidation (Flurbereinigung) in the 1950s, leading to a decline in natural habitats. In collaboration with local farmers, the initiative restores biodiversity by planting hedgerows on agricultural land. During the pilot phase, 642 m² of hedgerows were established, providing essential habitat for birds and insects, protecting soil from erosion, and creating a favorable microclimate for farming.

Through this initiative, companies can sponsor their own biodiversity hedgerow, making a direct and measurable contribution to ecosystem restoration. Supporting such projects not only enhances corporate sustainability efforts—demonstrated in CSR reports—but also offers opportunities for engaging company excursions. The initiative aligns with the goals of the UN Biodiversity Conference in Montreal (Kunming-Montreal Agreement) and the EU’s push for private sector investment in nature-based solutions.

Developed by the global-woods international team, this project emerged as a spin-off in collaboration with students and the SmartGreen Startup Accelerator of Baden-Württemberg. In 2025, it was honored with the Environmental Award of the City of Freiburg.

How Does It Work?

A biodiversity credit represents a measureable unit of biodiversity enhancement, for example an area of land that is restored. It can be used as a tool to enable direct investment in biodiversity restoration activity.

Regulated biodiversity compensation typically occurs within legal compliance frameworks (e.g., within the impact regulation of the Federal Nature Conservation Act in Germany) to offset unavoidable biodiversity loss. In contrast, voluntary investment in biodiversit…g ecosystem. Every initiative is based on scientific best practices to maximize biodiversity gains and create measurable ecological improvements.

The value of biodiversity is difficult to quantify, and—unlike CO₂—there is no standardized biodiversity metric for measurement. Therefore, we use the area of restored or enhanced land (measured in square meters, m²) as a key unit to quantify biodiversity improvements.

No, the true value of biodiversity is difficult to quantify, as it includes cultural, intrinsic, and ecological dimensions. Therefore, the price of our biodiversity credits does not represent the absolute value of biodiversity improvements but rather the effort and resources required to implement and maintain biodiversity-enhancing measures.

We collaborate with farmers and landowners to implement effective ecosystem restoration measures on their land. From planting to long-term maintenance, all costs are fully covered, ensuring a sustainable impact and lasting environmental benefits. Our projects restore essential habitats, support pollinators, and enhance soil health, fostering a more resilient and thriving ecosystem. Every initiative is based on scientific best practices to maximize biodiversity gains and create measurable ecological improvements.

We provide comprehensive monitoring and data insights to support your CSRD reporting and sustainability disclosures. Additionally, we offer marketing materials and organize on-site company events, allowing you to showcase your commitment to biodiversity in action.

Yes, our biodiversity certificates are available for purchase by both companies and private customers/individuals.

Why Biodiversity Matters

Biodiversity is essential for life on Earth, providing stability to ecosystems and sustaining livelihoods. However, human activities have led to severe biodiversity loss, putting ecosystems at risk. Despite the urgent need for restoration, funding for ecosystem recovery and biodiversity hotspots remains critically insufficient.

To address this gap, biodiversity credits were recognized at the UN Biodiversity Conference in Montreal (Kunming-Montreal Agreement) as a key solution to mobilize private sector funding for conservation. These credits enable businesses to take responsibility and actively contribute to restoring nature.

By leveraging private sector investments, we align with this global framework, helping to restore ecological balance, protect biodiversity, and support farmers who implement these restoration measures on their land.
