Project Description

This project is located in rural southwestern Germany, a region that experienced a significant loss of structural diversity due to land consolidation (Flurbereinigung) in the 1950s, leading to a decline in natural habitats. In collaboration with local farmers, the initiative restores biodiversity by planting hedgerows on agricultural land. During the pilot phase, 642 m² of hedgerows were established, providing essential habitat for birds and insects, protecting soil from erosion, and creating a favorable microclimate for farming.

Through this initiative, companies can sponsor their own biodiversity hedgerow, making a direct and measurable contribution to ecosystem restoration. Supporting such projects not only enhances corporate sustainability efforts—demonstrated in CSR reports—but also offers opportunities for engaging company excursions. The initiative aligns with the goals of the UN Biodiversity Conference in Montreal (Kunming-Montreal Agreement) and the EU’s push for private sector investment in nature-based solutions.

Developed by the global-woods international team, this project emerged as a spin-off in collaboration with students and the SmartGreen Startup Accelerator of Baden-Württemberg. In 2025, it was honored with the Environmental Award of the City of Freiburg.
