REFORESTATION PATAGONIA VERDE

global-woods-international has been working with several local farms (estancias) to plant trees on more than 3,650 hectares of degraded pastureland in Patagonia (Argentina). Initiated by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the Andean-Patagonian Forestry Research and Extension Center (CIEFAP) global-woods-international has implemented these ideas and cooperated with local farmers.

REFORESTATION

The reforestation project supports the expansion of forests in regions selected by the Argentinian state. This reduces the degradation of land and soil erosion.

CLIMATE IMPACT

The main objectives of the reforestation is to sequester carbon and to help landowners establish sustainable forestry as a second source of livelyhood alongside traditional livestock farming.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Manfred Vohrer initiated this pioneer project in the early 2000s. A memorandum of understanding was signed by the local Ministry of Agriculture with the aim of climate protection and to foster a regional wood industry value chain.

PEOPLE

The project locations all over Patagonia have promoted the diversification of the regional economic structure and creation of new jobs in less densely populated areas.

Biodiversity

Planted forests reduce soil erosion and create an environment where nature can recover.
